The Collapse of Godless Civilization: The Path to Human Renewal

Modern civilization has achieved unprecedented scientific and technological success, yet it continues to face deep moral, intellectual, and spiritual crises. This research argues that these crises stem from a civilization built upon materialism and separation from divine guidance. By examining both Western secular development and the contemporary Muslim condition, it proposes the Qur'anic worldview as a comprehensive path toward genuine human renewal and lasting civilizational balance.

The Collapse of Godless Civilization: The Path to Human Renewal

The Universal Affliction of Materialism

The modern world stands at an extraordinary stage of scientific achievement and material progress. Yet beneath this dazzling advancement lies a profound crisis that transcends nations, religions, and cultures. Humanity’s problems today are not merely political, economic, or technological; they spring from a deeper intellectual and philosophical foundation that shapes the modern worldview.

Whether East or West, Muslim or non-Muslim, all are caught in the same affliction. Humanity has fallen under the sway of a civilization nurtured entirely in the lap of materialism. Both its theoretical and practical wisdom rest on flawed premises. Its philosophy, science, morality, economics, society, politics, and law—in short, everything—has advanced from a false starting point in a misguided direction. Now it has reached a stage where the destination of destruction appears very close.

This civilization was born among a people who lacked a pure source of divine wisdom. Religious leaders existed, but they possessed neither true knowledge nor the law of God. Their religion was little more than imagination, incapable of guiding humanity onto the straight path of thought and action. At best, it served as an obstacle to the progress of wisdom and knowledge.

Thus, those who sought progress discarded religion altogether, embarking on a path guided only by observation, experiment, and induction. These unreliable guides, themselves in need of light, became their sole reliance. With them, they strove in thought, research, discovery, construction, and organization. Yet in every field, they remained bound to a flawed starting point, diverting all advancement toward a wrong destination.

The Roots of Western Secularization

They proceeded from the standpoint of atheism and materialism. They observed the universe under the assumption that it has no God. They studied the horizons and the human soul believing that reality consists only of what can be seen and sensed, with nothing beyond the visible veil. Through experiment and deduction, they grasped the laws of nature, but failed to reach the Creator of nature. They found creation subdued before them and began to exploit it, yet their minds were devoid of the realization that they were not its masters but its trustees.

This ignorance severed them from responsibility and accountability, corrupting the foundations of their culture. Forsaking God, they became worshippers of the self. The self, assuming the role of a false deity, led them into severe trial. Servitude to this false god now drives them along paths whose intermediate stages appear appealing, but whose final destination is destruction.

Science became an instrument of annihilation. Morality was moulded into selfishness, hypocrisy, shamelessness, and unrestrained indulgence. Economics was poisoned with self-interest and fratricide. Society was infused with hedonism and complacency. Politics was contaminated with nationalism, racial discrimination, and the worship of raw power—turning it into a supreme curse for humanity.

In short, the evil seed sown during the Renaissance has grown into a massive, wretched tree of civilization. Its fruits tempt with sweetness yet conceal poison; its flowers dazzle with beauty yet hide thorns; and its branches feign the promise of spring while breathing a silent venom that seeps into the lifeblood of humanity.

The Collapse of Internal Reforms in the West

The very people who planted this tree are now weary of it. It has created such deep complications and anxieties in every sphere of life that every attempt to resolve one problem only produces a multitude of new entanglements. Whichever branch they cut off, thorny branches sprout in its place. When they struck at capitalism, communism emerged. When they dealt a blow to democracy, dictatorship burst forth. When they tried to solve social issues, radical feminism and birth control appeared. When they attempted to legislate against moral corruption, lawlessness and criminality rose instead.

Thus, an endless chain of mischief emanates from this tree, turning Western life into a body throbbing with pain in every vein and fibre. Western nations are restless; their hearts are uneasy, and their souls yearn for some life-giving elixir. Yet they do not know where it is to be found. Most still suffer from the delusion that their misery lies merely in the branches of this tree, and so they waste their time lopping them off. They fail to see that the corruption lies in the root itself, and expecting wholesome branches from a rotten root is folly.

A small minority has realized that the root is rotten. Yet, having been nurtured under its shade for centuries, their minds cannot conceive of an alternative root that could yield wholesome fruit. Thus, both groups share the same plight: they search anxiously for a cure, yet remain ignorant of what it is and where it lies.

The Call to the Prophetic Paradigm

This is the opportune moment to present the Book of God and the methodology of Muhammad (peace be upon him) before the Western nations. They must be told:

This is the very objective your souls are restlessly seeking; this is the life-giving elixir for which you thirst. This is the wholesome tree whose roots are sound and whose branches are pure; its flowers are fragrant and thornless, its fruits sweet and nourishing, and its breeze gentle and soul-refreshing.

Here lies practical wisdom. Here lies the correct starting point for thought and vision. Here lies the knowledge that shapes human character. Here lies a spirituality not for recluses, but for those striving in the battlefield of life—granting inner peace and tranquillity. Here lie enduring principles of morality and law, rooted in human nature and immune to corruption by base desires.

Here lies the true foundation of culture and civilization, eliminating artificial class distinctions and superficial divisions, organizing society on rational grounds. It creates peace, equity, generosity, and fair dealing, leaving no room for conflicts of rights or interests. Instead, all can work together in cheerful cooperation for personal and collective well-being.

If you wish to escape annihilation before your civilization collapses into dust, you must purge your hearts of the prejudices inherited from medieval zealots. Cast them out, and with open hearts, listen to, understand, and accept the teachings of the Qur’an and Muhammad (peace be upon him).

The Stagnation of the Muslim World

The condition of Muslim nations is distinct, yet their remedy is the same: a return to the knowledge and guidance Allah sent through His final Book and Prophet.

When Islam clashed with Rome, Persia, India, and China, Muslims held absolute sway over intellect and action. The spirit of Jihad and Ijtihad was alive. Spiritually and materially, they were the dominant nation, shaping the world wherever they turned. Their civilization absorbed foreign elements but reshaped them according to its own nature, preventing imbalance. Their influence was revolutionary: some civilizations dissolved into Islam, others were transformed at their core.

But centuries of rule exhausted them. The spirit of Jihad grew cold, Ijtihad became paralyzed, and the Qur’an was reduced to a relic. The Sunnah was abandoned. Progress halted. Leadership slipped away. A flowing river froze into stagnation.

Meanwhile, the West picked up the banner of Jihad and Ijtihad. While Muslims slept, the West advanced in knowledge and action, seizing global leadership. Their sword conquered lands, their thought conquered minds. When Muslims awoke, they found themselves dispossessed. Knowledge, civilization, law, and governance—all belonged to others. Only a fading lamp remained.

The Intellectual Crisis of Modern Muslims

Today, Islam confronts Western civilization in a different way. True Islam, if present, would be unmatched. But where is true Islam?

Among Muslims today:

There is neither Islamic character, morality, thought, nor spirit.

The genuine spirit of Islam is absent from mosques, schools, and retreats.

Islam’s connection with practical life is severed.

Law is enforced neither individually nor collectively.

No branch of culture or civilization is organized on Islamic principles.

Thus, the contest is not between Islam and the West, but between a stagnant Muslim culture and a vibrant Western civilization. The outcome is clear:

Muslims retreat, their culture defeated, absorbed into Western civilization.

Their faculties are trained by Western principles.

Their morals, economics, society, and politics are dyed in Western hues.

Their youth grow up believing Western law is the true law of life.

This defeat is the defeat of Muslims, but tragically, it is mistaken as the defeat of Islam itself.

The Failure of Traditional Religious Leadership

No Muslim nation is free from this affliction. The Ulama should have awakened early, studied the foundations of Western civilization, and integrated useful discoveries into Islamic frameworks. This would have revived progress.

But most Ulama lacked the spirit of Islam and the capacity for Ijtihad. They clung blindly to past jurists, whose opinions, though valuable, were bound by their own times. Thus, they failed to guide Muslims in a world transformed. Movement cannot be countered with inertia. Modern weaponry cannot be resisted with rusted tools. Their methods could never succeed.

Inevitably, Muslims were defeated politically, intellectually, and culturally. Today, Westernization sweeps through the Islamic world, carrying new generations far from the centre of Islam.

The Polarization of Modern Muslim Society

Tragically, the Ulama have not realized their blunder. In almost every Muslim country, they persist in the very approach that caused their initial failure. With rare exceptions, they make no effort to comprehend contemporary trends or the psychological restructuring of modern minds. You may ask them to express as much abhorrence as you like toward the elements alienating young Muslims from Islam, but they will not take the trouble to formulate an antidote to this poison. They consistently fail to resolve the complex intellectual and practical problems that modern conditions have created for Muslims, precisely because the resolution of these problems is impossible without Ijtihad—a practice they have rendered forbidden upon themselves.

The methodology our Ulama employ today to articulate Islamic teachings and laws repels modern-educated minds rather than endearing Islam to them. Often, upon hearing their sermons or reading their writings, an involuntary prayer escapes the heart: May God ensure that this discordant voice never reaches the ears or eyes of a non-Muslim or a wayward Muslim!

They have constructed around themselves an atmosphere that is two centuries old. Within that antiquated bubble, they think, live, and converse. To be sure, the gems of Islamic sciences survive today solely due to the breath of these elders, and whatever religious education is spreading is due to their medium. However, the vast two-hundred-year chasm they have maintained between themselves and the modern era prevents any meaningful link from forming between Islam and the contemporary world. Consequently, whoever turns toward religious education becomes entirely useless for the practical affairs of the world, and whoever wishes to become useful for worldly affairs remains completely ignorant of Islamic teachings.

This is the primary reason why two diametrically opposed groups exist everywhere in the Muslim world today. One group is the custodian of Islamic sciences and culture but is entirely incapable of leading Muslims in any practical sphere of life. The second group is driving the intellectual, literary, and political vehicle of the Muslims, yet it remains ignorant of the foundational principles of Islam, alienated from the spirit of Islamic culture, and unacquainted with its social system and civil laws. It possesses nothing more than a faint glimmer of faith in a corner of the heart; in all other respects, there is no difference between them and a non-Muslim.

Yet, because all intellectual and practical power rests in the hands of this second group, and it is their arms and shoulders that possess the strength to steer the vehicle, they are driving the nation’s carriage toward valleys of deviation. There is no one to show them the straight path.

My Personal Resolve

I observe this condition, and it’s terrifying end stands vividly before my eyes. Admittedly, I do not possess the profound scholarship, erudition, or comprehensive excellence required for global leadership, nor do I command the strength necessary to reform such a massive nation under such corrupted conditions. However, God has placed an agonizing pain within my heart, and it is this very pain that compels me to utilize whatever meagre knowledge and insight He has granted me.

I feel driven to invite all the Muslim groups and sects to return to the original source of Islamic teaching and the true fountainhead of Islamic civilization. Disregarding the prospects of success or failure, I am determined to put forth my best effort. When I look at the magnitude of the task and contrast it with my own weaknesses, my efforts appear entirely insignificant to me. Yet, success and failure rest entirely in the hands of the Almighty. My duty is simply to strive, and to the utmost limit of my capacity, I intend to expand the circle of my endeavours.

Conclusion

This paper acts as a timeless civilizational critique. Through a blend of historical analysis and social psychology, it highlights that the global crisis of modernity stems from an underlying structural defect:

Building an entire civilization on a purely materialistic, godless framework.

For Western societies, the paper argues that internal structural adjustments—such as swinging between capitalism and communism, or democracy and dictatorship—are merely superficial treatments for a disease rooted deep within the civilizational foundation. For the Muslim world, it identifies a paralyzing internal polarization caused by traditionalists who refuse to engage with the modern era via Ijtihad, leaving secularized elites who are detached from their spiritual roots to lead the community into intellectual assimilation.

Ultimately, the thesis is singular:

True human progress and systemic equilibrium can only be restored when science, law, and social structures are realigned with permanent divine governance and prophetic moral principles.
